We know that this is supposed to be the NBA’s “slow period”, but truth be told, it was a very busy week here in Philadunkia nation. The 76ers released their 2009-10 schedule, picked up a free agent — a European player no less — , hired an assistant coach, Elton Brand spoke, we got a first look at Iguodala’s new Nike sneaker and we found out that our new arch rivals, the Orlando Magic, are cheaters.
What else could a Sixers fan ask for during the second week of August?
Andre Iguodala has had a very busy summer, in addition to trying out for USA Basketball, Tweeting almost hourly and working out yesterday via Twitter we learned that Iguodala gave a motivational talk to Taco Bell execs (picture at left) and took a yoga session. Also AI9’s new Nike hyperizers commercial just hit the internet.
SI.com’s Scott Howard-Cooper grades the Sixers off-season (so far) as a C- . We’d say that’s a generous an accurate grade.
The Orlando Sentinel broke the story that Rashard Lewis, Orlando Magic forward, tests positive for a steroidand will suspended for the first 10 games of the 2009-10 season. Lewis took an over-the-counter supplement near the end of last season which he did not know contained the banned substance commonly known as DHEA. Does this mean we can protest the outcome of the 2009 First Round Playoff series vs. the Magic? Because if we recall correctly that happened at the “end of last season” and Lewis was a big factor in Games 4, 5 and 6 vs. the Sixers (17, 24 & 29 points respectively). Seems to us that there could be a connection there.
Foxsports.com’s Charley Rosen reveals that this upcoming season will be critical for a handful of star-quality, 25-and-under players and guess which Sixer is on his list? That’s right “Chief Blocka” himself, Andre Iguodala.
Word out of the Wachovia Center is that the Sixers won’t resign Donyell Marshall. Which shows that the Sixers can learn from their mistakes. We love marshall and think he could really contribute in Philly, but it makes no sense to sign a player of value and that not play him at all, as the Sixers did with Marshall in 2008-09.
On the Twitter front, Royal Ivey was recently trying to decide between a salad or Chiplote
The Sixershired Randy Ayers as an assistant coach which makes sense for Ayers as his son Cameron balls at Germantown Academy. However it could spell the end of any hope Sixers fans had of Stefanski bringing Allen Iverson home to Philly for next season. As we all remember Iverson and Ayers had some legendary clashes back when Ayers was the Sixers head coach at the start of the post Larry Brown era.
Finally, the Sixers preseason schedule was released late yesterday and it has the 76ers traveling to Mexico before the regular season tips off.
