Sir Charles on the 76ers & Tanking

barkley12Sixers legend Charles Barkley has no shortage of opinions on the rebuilding process Sam Hinkie and this franchise have embarked on since early last summer.  Back in August 2013 “Sir Charles” told the WIP Morning Show crew that he was “disappointed” with the way the Sixers fired their assistant coaches; that he didn’t understand why they waited until after the draft to hire a coach; doesn’t think tanking works and that he doesn’t “believe in that analytical crap.”

Tuesday on ESPN’s Mike & Mike Show, Charles again was not at a loss for words when it came to the 76ers a well as tanking in the NBA.  The odd thing is, based on his comments to Mike & Mike, Barkley seems to have come full circle on Hinkie and the Sixers rebuilding techniques.

JaneenMasiejczyk_SixersDanceTeamMemphis head coach Josh Pastnor has some deep Philly roots and ohhh yeah…his family may have video tape of Wilt’s 100-point game.

For ESPN.com…David Thorpe of scout.com ranks the rookies in the Association.  Hint: MCW does well in this ranking.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Australian draft lottery prospect Dante Exum has met with agents and may be headed to the NBA.

Speaking of the 2014 Draft, nbadraft.net has the Sixers selecting Julius Randle in the 5th spot and a PG at #12.

A quick “76ers” search on craigslist.com pulls up hundreds of ticket ads and this ball signed by Barkley and Iverson.

CHUCK SPEAKS ON THE SIXERS

Two days ago Charles Barkley’s took some time off from playing “turrable” golf and then put down his Taco Bell five buck box for a second in order to utter some apparently well thought out comments on the state of the Philadelphia 76ers.  Chuck’s comments produced very spirited debate here in Philly as many Sixers fans were enraged while others among the faithful were left nodding their heads in approval.

Here at Philadunkia we’re just as divided on Chuck’s comments as the rest of 76ers nation, so we have decided to look at both sides of the spectrum.

In case you missed it, below are Chuck’s words of wisdom:

“Why is Doug Collins trying to win games?” Barkley told Bob Ford of The Philadelphia Inquirer. “That’s stupid. They should develop the young guys and try to get a better draft pick.”

“Doug’s a great coach.  Don’t get me wrong,” Barkley added.  “But sometimes coaches get carried away with their own egos.  But in a situation like this, it’s not about them.”

After the jump, Philadunkia scribes Nabeel Ahmadieh (pro) and Kevin Jones (anti) “debate” Sir Charles’ comments.

76ers ULTIMATE FIRST FIVE

Late last week, ESPN.com launched a project that with the help of online fan voting attempted to determine the five ultimate players (by position) in every NBA franchise’s history.  It’s a great and fun post and if you haven’t voted yet, we highly suggest you take five minutes of your time to do so.

You can view the up-to-date results of the voting for the 76ers all-time team by clicking here

In our opinion the voting for the Sixers all-time starting five has been very predictable and while there’s nothing “wrong” with the all-time lineup the fans have assembled for the 76ers franchise, Philadunkia’s Tom Sunnegren believes that by bending a few of the voting rules he was able to put together a squad that would trump the team the voters have put out on the floor.

GETTING THE G.O.A.T.

michael-jordanbwThere is no doubt in our minds that Michael Jordan is the G.O.A.T. and we genuflect out of respect for his basketball skills and accomplishments at both the NCAA and NBA levels. Outside of former Philadelphia Warrior legend and City of Brotherly Love native Wilt Chamberlain and possibly Bill Russell, perhaps no individual is more deserving of induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame then Michael. Hoops web sites all over the world will be paying homage to #23 today and rightly so.

However, Philadunkia is a blog dedicated to the Philadelphia 76ers – the good and the bad; on and off the court. So even though we realize that MJ absolutely owned our home team during his playing days – from the 56 he dropped on Barkley back in 1987 to the “Stackhouse Game” to the 30 spot he hung on Iverson as a Wizard – we still felt that since this is a 76er loyal site, we should “flip the script” as they say and run down a list of the best moments in 76ers history that occurred at the expense of Air Jordan and his teammates.
