NEW DIRECTION

It’s official.

After being introduced to both the media and the city of Philadelphia by owner Josh Harris earlier today, Sam Hinkie is now the President of Basketball Operations and General Manager of the 76ers.

Much has been said about Hinkie, whether it be on his tenure with the Rockets, his successful investment career, or his firm belief in analytics, but today he got to answer a few of Philadelphia’s questions for himself.  His remarks should only strengthen the support that the organization has received for this hire.

Hinkie put organizational culture at the forefront of his comments throughout the press conference.  From the get go, it was clear that Josh Harris and Co. were a big reason he accepted the position.  He stated the ownership group is “committed to building a basketball operation that is data-driven, strategic, and relentlessly innovative.”  Hinkie added that, before accepting the position, he spoke with both investors and competitors from within the basketball and investment realms to ensure that the franchise was headed in a direction he agreed with.

WHEELING & DEALING

Few could have imagined the season turned out the way it did.  The 76ers were supposed to be this, that and the other thing.  What came to pass was the realization that this past summer was one of the uglier summers in NBA history.

Now the Sixers are a team left with holes larger than just the void in the middle cause by Andrew Bynum’s knees.  As I have mentioned ad nauseum, the 76ers are in a very bad place going forward with no clear path to anything.

After the jump, are some trade possibilities that can be a change for the better next year or the long run.  The premise is to do all of these trades or none at all.  Part 1 will be for the future, “Hello, 25% shot at Andrew Wiggins and the return of the Anti-Gravity Treadmill”.  Part 2 will assume the future is now

On last note, while the ESPN.com trade machine says the salaries don’t work, once Jrue’s $9.2 million salary kicks in, these trades would work.

TOP PRIORITY: A GM

If there is anything the eight Game 1s of the 2013 NBA Playoffs taught us, besides that home court actually does matter in the NBA, it’s that whichever team has the better players wins.  It’s a simple as that.  Thus, it make sense for the 76ers to start their rebuilding process by focusing their attention on getting the best players on the court, right?

Wrong.

This, if anything, the troublesome Sixers ownership and management group must start this off-season by making key off-the-court decisions before they can start looking to solve their on-the-court issues.  The Sixers brass must find a smart general manager who can run this franchise correctly.

Recent NBA history has proven this method can be very successful.

FORMER SIXERS UNITE

04/16/13 2:52 pm EST

How good would a team comprised of former 76ers players currently active in the NBA be?

It’s an interesting question in what has been an interesting season to say the least.  So, let’s take a look at the possibilities.

We will use the current salaries of every player and keep under $60,000,000.  Elton Brand will not be included because he was amnestied and would prefer jail in Siberia to being on a hypothetical former 76ers roster.  Each player would essentially be a clone of himself and injuries are a part of things in this exercise.

Head Coach:  Aaron McKie

Asst Coach:  Eric Snow

PG:  Lou Williams, Andre Miller; $10,000,000

SG:  Thabo Sefolosha, Kyle Korver, Jodie Meeks; $10,100,000

SF:  Andre Iguodala, Matt Barnes, Mo Harkless; $17,900,000

PF:  Marreese  Speights, Reggie Evans; $5,800,000

C:  Nik Vucevic, Samuel Dalembert; $8,400,000

GM 78: (B2B TANKS) RAPID REACTS

Posted by: C. Smith
04/11/13 9:31 am EST
Atlanta Hawks 124 FinalRecap | Box Score 101 Philadelphia 76ers
Thaddeus Young, SF 32 MIN | 14-20 FG | 0-0 FT | 8 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 28 PTS | -16

After what was probably his worst performance ever against Brooklyn, #21 recovered nicely with an outstanding night at the WFC.  Thad scored 10 straight in the late 2nd Q and that was the only thing keeping the Sixers remotely close in this one.  Thad was ridiculous in the 1st half — 22 points on 11-of-16 from the field.  It was the most points scored in a half by any Sixer this season.  He was the only Sixer who looked like he remotely cared about this game.

Evan Turner, SF 39 MIN | 4-12 FG | 1-2 FT | 5 REB | 7 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 5 TO | 9 PTS | -13

“The Enigma” didn’t shoot the ball well and he turned the rock over 5 times.  The scary part is he’s not rebounding the ball either right now, so I question if he has any value at all when he plays like he did last night.  5 of his 9 points came in the 4th Q when this game was long over.

Spencer Hawes, C 25 MIN | 2-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 5 PTS | -10

The last two games have proven why the Sixers won’t be able to trade Spencer for a bucket of Gatorade this off-season.

Jrue Holiday, PG 27 MIN | 4-14 FG | 3-3 FT | 5 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 5 TO | 12 PTS | -19

It’s no secret that Jrue is struggling with his shot, but his assist to turnover ratio (1:5) was deplorable last night.

Damien Wilkins, SG 23 MIN | 0-7 FG | 6-6 FT | 2 REB | 4 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 6 PTS | -9

Four points (from the FT line) in the 1st Q and then nothing…You know the tank is on when DW has a night like this one…

Arnett Moultrie, PF 22 MIN | 3-5 FG | 1-1 FT | 7 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 7 PTS | -7

With five points in the 2nd Q, Moultrie helped Thad keep the Sixers in this game prior to the half. Despite showing that he was one of only two Sixers who came to compete last night, Collins held #5 to 22 minutes.  UNREAL

Dorell Wright, SF 26 MIN | 4-9 FG | 5-5 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 15 PTS | -16

Don’t let the stat line fool you…10 of Wright’s 15 points came in the garbage time filled 4th Q.

Lavoy Allen, C 12 MIN | 0-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -15

If Fran Dunphy and Doug Collins can’t find a way to reach this guy, who can?

Nick Young, SG 26 MIN | 6-9 FG | 4-5 FT | 3 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 19 PTS | -7

Swaggy does one thing well — score the rock — and for the second straight game he did a bunch of that in garbage time.

Kwame Brown, C DNP COACH’S DECISION MIN | FG | FT | REB | AST | STL | BLK | TO | PTS |

Photo op: Sunday may be your last chance to witness Kwame riding the pine for the Sixers at the WFC — make sure you have your cameras ready.

Doug Collins

“We so used to value the ball,” Collins said post game. “We led the league last year in fewest turnovers. Too many times I look down and I see too many points off turnovers. We were minus-12 [in points off turnovers] tonight. If we’re down in that stat, chances are we’re not going to win the game. That’s a real barometer for our team.” DC — didn’t you have a major role is assembling this turnover prone roster?!?

THE RESURGENCE of WILKINS

Posted by: Steve Toll
03/28/13 1:40 pm EST

The 76ers are 5-4 in their last 9 games and if they hadn’t simply given away a game in Denver last Thursday that record would be even more impressive.  Collins & Co. have won 6 games overall in March – their highest monthly win total since December.  There are a couple of reasons for the improved play of the Sixers over the past month, but none have been a big factor than Damien Wilkins.

The 33-year old Wilkins has had a resurgence that is reminiscent of the Jason Richardson we saw in the first month of the year.  Damien’s play of late is both unexpected and more so untimely.  Whether it is a case of veteran savvy coupled with intense mental fortitude or variance, DW has been managed to produce at a level far above even he likely thought possible — 18 points; 5 boards and 4 dimes last night.

GM 59: (BORED) RAPID REACTS

Posted by: C. Smith
03/06/13 9:26 am EST
Boston Celtics 109 FinalRecap | Box Score 101 Philadelphia 76ers
Thaddeus Young, SF 33 MIN | 9-20 FG | 1-3 FT | 10 REB | 0 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 19 PTS | -11

IMO it was a quiet and interesting double-double for Thad. He played with his usual energy and intensity, but his scoring came in odd bursts. His 6 point run during the second half of the 3rd Q helped the Sixers claw back into this one, so that way key. However, if you look a the game closely you’ll see that another 6 of Thad’s point came after the 1:32 mark of the 4th Q when this game was already over.

Evan Turner, SF 44 MIN | 6-19 FG | 5-5 FT | 9 REB | 7 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 18 PTS | -7

Turner played a lot of PG last night and the result was…Too many 3PAs by ET…Too many FGAs by ET and not enough ball movement.  He did a nice job of getting into the lane for buckets or trips to the FT line.  Still, at the 4:50 mark of the 4th he threw up two wild shots and missed a lay-in and I chucked the remote across the room.

Spencer Hawes, C 28 MIN | 7-12 FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 2 BLK | 2 TO | 14 PTS | +8

Let me say that Hawes played decently last night on the offensive end.  However KG simply owns this guy and it’s sad to watch.  In this game Spence caught and alley-oop and blocked one by BOS.  I have no stats to back this up, but a I believe that’s the first time Hawes has pulled off that combo.  My favorite play was when KG pinned (it was goal tending, but still) Spence’s shot from behind because Hawes decide to lay-in a bunny rather then slamming it home.

Royal Ivey, PG 37 MIN | 4-9 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 3 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 10 PTS | +8

A third straight start for Ivey (Sixers are now 1-2 in those games) and now that he has some confidence, Ivey is hurting this team.  I know he has been hot from behind the arc this year, but seven 3PAs is too many for this career journeyman.  He also was not much help slowing down Bradley.

Jrue Holiday, PG 42 MIN | 6-17 FG | 6-6 FT | 5 REB | 10 AST | 4 STL | 0 BLK | 5 TO | 18 PTS | +8

A wildly inconsistent night from Jrue.  He did a great job of getting to the rim, but didn’t score efficiently.  He handed out 10 dimes, but he turned the ball over too many times.  He has moments of great defense and lapses of simply awful defensive play.

Arnett Moultrie, PF 20 MIN | 5-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 10 PTS | -13

12-12 from the field in his last 4 games and as a bonus, Moultrie is exciting to watch.

Dorell Wright, SF 23 MIN | 3-13 FG | 2-2 FT | 7 REB | 2 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 10 PTS | -13

Wright has one job — hit open jumpers. Last night he did not do that for the Sixers

Lavoy Allen, C 3 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -4

So Allen has had decent success guarding KG in the past, but he only gets 3 mins. of run vs. BOS.

Damien Wilkins, SG 11 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-2 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 2 PTS | -16

Moving on…

Kwame Brown, C DNP COACH’S DECISION MIN | FG | FT | REB | AST | STL | BLK | TO | PTS |

Does anyone know what the Sixers record for DNP-CDs is in one season?

Doug Collins

I liked that DC played Jrue off the ball for most of the time that Avery Bradley was in the game.  It was a smart way to get Jrue some easier looks.  I liked that he played Moultrie early, but the red hot Moultrie should have played even more.  KG kills Hawes.  Allen gives KG problems.  Yet Hawes played 28 ticks and Allen only 3.  That’s a head scratcher.  I also don’t like that he has buried Pargo.  I would like to have seen Pargo at the point with Holiday at the SG for stretches of this game.  Also why was Holiday on the bench for a large stretch to open the 4th Q?  Finally, DC has to come up with a solution for the Sixers terrible 3rd Q starts.  A quick 6-2 run by the C’s out of the half killed the 7-6 in this one.

NOTES, LINKS & TWEETS

A great “open letter” style email piece to Sixers ownership from Jason Wolf at delawareonline.com.  A MUST READ.

John Finger at csnphilly.com thinks the Sixers organization need to “flip the script” and looks at the Sixers horrible tendency to shoot from “the yard”.  Something we have been complaining about all year.

Video commentary by Stephen A. Smith  & Skip Bayless on DC’s meltdown.

From Yahoo Sports, a preview of tonight’s Sixers at Bulls game which is on national TV.  The Sixers could get really smoked tonight in Chicago and further continue their slide to the 2013 Lottery.  Although the Bulls are 4-8 in their last 12 games.

A quick “76ers” search on craigslist.com finds a guy with 100 Mo Speights youth jerseys to sell.  NO LIE!

With the 2012-13 season firmly in the crapper, it’s time to look at he 2013 NBA Draft.  At nbadraft.net they are projecting that the 76ers will select 11th and take Willie Cauley-Stein from Kentucky.

GM 53: (LOWLY) RAPID REACTS

Posted by: C. Smith
02/24/13 11:38 am EST
Miami Heat 114 FinalRecap | Box Score 90 Philadelphia 76ers
Lavoy Allen, PF 32 MIN | 2-7 FG | 2-2 FT | 6 REB | 3 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 6 PTS | -14

After a stellar 1st Q in which he scored, rebounded, dropped a dime or two and set some nice picks, Lavoy disappeared.  What remains most disturbing for me is that he defense has not gotten any better since he entered the NBA.

Evan Turner, SF 36 MIN | 8-19 FG | 0-0 FT | 7 REB | 5 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 5 TO | 16 PTS | -17

Another roller coaster night from the enigma that is Evan Turner.  He came out of the gates fast going by going to the rim and hitting 3-3 in the 1st Q. He then missed his next 4 FGAs in the 1st half.  ET was also part of curious “small lineup” in the 2nd Q that provided little resistance for the Heat.  In the 2nd half ET started 2-2 on FGAs and then proceeded to go 2-5.  FYI…ET is now 0-for-his-last-12 on 3PAs

Spencer Hawes, C 25 MIN | 1-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 3 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 2 PTS | -15

Moving on…

Jrue Holiday, PG 37 MIN | 8-11 FG | 3-4 FT | 6 REB | 6 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 21 PTS | -16

A very good night for Jrue that included only 2 TOs against one of the better defensive teams in the NBA.  It was odd to me that he did not attempt a FG until 1:47 remained in the 1st Q, but I especially liked the way he attacked the rim from that point on.  Holiday’s effort inspired this ohh so true quote from Lebron, “”Holiday is a great player, but he needs help.”

Nick Young, SG 33 MIN | 8-14 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 19 PTS | -17

Yes he scored 19 points, but 12 of those came in the 1st Q and he had 14 at halftime.  Like a lot of the Sixers, Swaggy didn’t have what it takes to hang with the Heat in the 2nd half.

Arnett Moultrie, PF 7 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -3

So in 2 games since the ASB, Doug has given Moultrie a total of 7 minutes.  That’s a joke.

Dorell Wright, SF 32 MIN | 6-13 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 17 PTS | -16

Dorell was determined to get his against the team that drafted him straight out of high school.  Some of the 3PAs he hoisted up last night were more then ill-advised, but he managed to shoot 50% so I guess we can’t be too critical.

Jeremy Pargo, PG 22 MIN | 2-4 FG | 2-2 FT | 2 REB | 5 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 7 PTS | -13

Why bother signing this guy for the remainder of the season if you are not going to use him properly?

Royal Ivey, PG 8 MIN | 0-4 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 0 PTS | -6

For me this was 8 minutes too many.  Give those ticks to the new guy Charles Jenkins or Pargo.

Damien Wilkins, SG 7 MIN | 0-0 FG | 2-2 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | -3

Garbage time…

Kwame Brown, C DNP COACH’S DECISION MIN | FG | FT | REB | AST | STL | BLK | TO | PTS |

Do you think Kwame works out or gets some shots up after each DNP-CD?  Me neither.

Charles Jenkins, PG DNP COACH’S DECISION MIN | FG | FT | REB | AST | STL | BLK | TO | PTS |

Sorry kid…Welcome to DC’s bench

Doug Collins

I’m not sure there was anything Doug could have done to stop last night’s lopsided loss, so I can’t blame much of this one on him.  But I am having major issues with his management of minutes. Hawes was awful last night, but Moultrie doesn’t get in until garbage time?  Same with Lavoy.  He limited Pargo to 22 mins. as well.  I also did not like the Ivey/Turner/Pargo/Wright/Allen lineup that he trotted out there in the 2nd Q.  The results for that lineup weren’t pretty.  And whatever speech he gave in in the locker room at halftime needs to be thrown out and never used again.

INTERVIEW: SWAGGY STAR(TER)

Posted by: Jeff McMenamin
02/11/13 8:00 am EST

Fashionable?  Check.

Exciting to watch?  Check.

Catchy nickname?  Check.

There’s a lot of reasons to like Nick “Swaggy P” Young.  After a miserable start to the season, Young found himself riding the almighty pine.  He registered five DNP’s from coach Doug Collins and fans became uneasy with the idea of giving any kind of minutes to Young for an already offensively challenged team.

Then January rolled around.  Young strung together a few solid performances off the bench, even though the Sixers still piled up losses, and coach Doug Collins felt like it was time to make a switch.

He inserted Young into the starting lineup and the Sixers have gone 5-2 ever since.  He’s had four games of over 15 points during that span, including 20 in a 97-80 domination of the Knicks.

Over the weekend, Philadunkia scribe Jeff McMenamin, got a chance to talk to Young about his recent success as well as his intricate personality that fans are getting to know and love.
